Stellenbosch Comrades – In Aid of Helping Hand SA

Sunday, 14 June would have been the 2020 Comrades Marathon (the Down Run), 90km from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. The race was first run in 1921 to commemorate South African soldiers killed during World War I, and this is the first time the race has been cancelled since World War II. Andrew and STS will be doing the Stellenbosch Comrades in order to support two charitable projects run by Helping Hand SA.

Message from Andrew:
At 6am on Sunday, 14 June, I’ll be setting off to run my 4th Comrades. I’ll be doing 10km loops through the town of Stellenbosch, hopefully completing all 90km. Comrades is known as the Ultimate Human Race and is a humbling and inspirational event. I’ll be running the event to raise money for Helping Hand SA, which has been actively helping the needy in South Africa, and really needs and appreciates your assistance. All of the donations will go towards Helping Hand SA.

I’ll appreciate all the support you can give me, whether it is a donation to Helping Hand SA, an air high-five or join me on the route (at a safe distance of course).  I’ve chosen a scenic and mostly flat route through Stellenbosch, and plan to run each loop in about 60min (6min/km). My water point will be outside Kompanje in Dorp Street, so come for coffee and join in the fun.

So please be part of what promises to be a fun day out.

Kind Regards
Andrew Bird

Message from Helping Hand SA

With winter upon us, we feel especially burdened for all of these who have so little and would suffer greatly in the wet and cold.

  • Baphumelele Orphanage and Centre in Khayelitsha.
    • We have been working with them for over 10 years, and have always been impressed with how much they do with whatever they receive.
    • Between the children at the orphanage and the elderly in their care home they have 160 dependents.
    • Mama Rosie Mashale (founder and head of Baphumelele) has a real heart for the community (she still lives there) and is constantly improving and expanding her efforts.
    • We would love to be able to provide them with a large quantity of non-perishable foodstuffs, as well as extra blankets and boots.

  • Morningstar informal settlement off the N7 in Cape Town.
    • The community comprises about 400 individuals, who we have been assisting for over 4 years
    • Assistance includes foodstuffs when possible and a weekly inspirational and educational meeting with approximately 40 the children aged 4-14.
    • Our goal is to be able to provide an aid parcel for each person and blanket for each family.
